Once
I thought I found 
The definite reason why I stay up all night
The reason why after so many years of emotional slumber
Now deserved this sudden fire that burned
Ironic, it may seem: How my eyes were awake, but my heart wasn't.
Once
I thought the conversations I dreamt of
Under the stars we dared to match, were finally real.
His insecurities, my fears, his first kiss, my first pet
Mundane, it may seem: How the exchange was an awkward battle,
Actually was a sweet little victory.
Once
I thought how he embraced my flaws,
Freckles, thick lips, calloused hands, and all
Should be buried  deep in the recesses of my memory.
Genuine, it may seem: How I learned it was just a slip of a sharp tongue.
Once.
